The Hilux started its production in March 1968 as the RN10 in short wheelbase form with a 1.5L engine This happened to be a 1.6L I4 engine in February 1971.

In April 1969, a long wheelbase version was added to the range. The version short wheelbase has also completed production for many years. The long wheelbase version has not been sold in the North American market until 1972.
Despite its name "Hilux", it was a luxury vehicle as compared to the Stout. Hilux has been designed and assembled by Hino Motors Hino and increase Briska Stout briska or replacement in some markets. For the U.S. market, body style only a bed regular cab short and they were all driving the rear wheel. In mid-1972, the 1973 Hilux was released as the RN20. A comfortable interior has been refined with exterior updates. A ft 7.5 (2.3 m) long bed "was optional for the first time in North America, although it has been available worldwide since April 1969.

In North America, the Hilux seen the use four-wheel drive. He had a solid front axle and suspension of the leaf. 1983 SR5 4×4 Pickup
In 1981, a development agreement has been established between Toyota, Winnebago Industries and two other customizers spare. This would allow Toyota to enter the SUV market in North America. Initiative Research and Development Trekker of the 4Runner, which was published in 1984. The 4Runner has been sold in Australia, North America and the United Kingdom, and in some other markets, like Japan, has been called the Hilux Surf.
Towards the end of the campaign production of SR5 (1983 model year), Toyota introduced the Mojave luxury for the American market as a limited production (3,500 units) model with options not available in any other pickup Toyota. Price U.S. 8308 $ Bucket seats feature two speakers multi-radio, chrome front and rear bumpers, and no other Toyota logo on the grille or the rear door. Regulator speed, steering and air conditioning are optional. It was powered by the SR5 standard 2.4-liter (150 cu in) to the fourth line.

The revision of 1984 introduced the possibility Cab Xtracab two-row view. There was also a model of fuel injection, the 22R-E. Two diesel engines have also been proposed, and turbo 2L 2L-T. The Hilux in South America was produced in Colombia from 1998 to 2005 Sofas (Only 2.7 cc petrol engine), sold and exported (Venezuela and Ecuador, where the only 2WD Chassis Cab / Long Bed is called Stout II). Facelift
The name Tacoma comes from a word by the Lushootseed Tahoma volcano of the Cascade Range, known as Mount Rainier in English, which is visible from Tacoma, Washington, USA.
The Tacoma frame differs from the structure Hilux, even though the two are similar outside. Both the Tacoma and Hilux variants are sold in Mexico.
The ninth generation of compact pickups from Toyota, was radically put Updated with a new chassis and bodywork, new suspension and new engines. All versions now appears front suspension springs with a type independent of one arm and springs in the back.
The Tacoma was renovated in 1998, when the front fascia and the frame have been changes and adding major new emblems. It was renovated again in 2001, when a new "double cab (crew cab) option was added, and flashy S-Runner was offered as well.

Both the Tacoma and the Hilux were updated in 2005. The Tacoma was based on the new chassis Land Cruiser Prado, while the Hilux rides on an updated version of the ladder frame in previous versions. The new Hilux got bigger, now classified as a medium pick. The Tacoma has a new 4.0-liter V6 engine that produces 236 horsepower (176 kW) and 266 ftlbf (361 Nm) of torque. Its design is very similar to the 4Runner.
They are sold in Europe, Australia, the Asia are built and assembled in Thailand and are known as the Hilux Vigo. For contracts Africa south of Iceland and the Hilux is built in Durban, South Africa. In December 2009, is the best selling vehicle in southern Africa. Those that are sold in South America are Argentina (equal to the previous generation Hilux). The Vigo Hilux platform was used as the basis for Toyota's IMV program which led to the Innova MPV and Fortuner SUV PPV /.
In Malaysia, the Hilux is only available in 2.5 L with a choice of Cab or Double Cab. [Edit] The double cab is a variant of the automatic transmission. It uses the same engine as the other Asian countries (line 4 cylinder DOHC 16-valve direct injection common rail turbo diesel), but the specifications of the models are slightly different in Malaysia that its maximum power is 75 kW at 3600 rpm and maximum torque is 260 Nm at 1600-2400 rpm.
The Hilux is now availble in Singapore with a 3.0 liter engine and the choice of cab or double cab. [Edit] It uses the same engine as in other countries (line 4 cylinder 16-valve, DOHC Turbo Diesel common rail direct injection), however, This engine is built in Japan (also used by Prado) instead of Argentina. It is also used for taxi services and police in Singapore.

Facelift
A facelifted version the Hilux has been presented by Toyota dealers in Malaysia, UMW Toyota Motor, in August 2008. Toyota has launched a campaign against left facelifted Hilux Vigo in August 2008, while the right hand drive Hilux Vigo facelifted 2009 model should be launched in September 2008. The facelifted models have been introduced to the Philippines in October 2008.
Toyota has also introduced a system of rear access called Smart Cab "to replace all Cabs Xtra E and G of degree. Smart Templates is only for the domestic market in Thailand.

Recreational Vehicles (RV) was built on truck chassis Toyota since the introduction Toyota Chinook in 1977, a standard chassis until 1993, when the last Winnebago and national coaches completed in the last frame of 1992. Since then, there were a number of manufacturers who used the small Toyota truck chassis to build houses as a small Class C motor Chinook, RBR, New Horizons the coachman, Huntsman, national (under the Dolphin and the names of Seabreaze), Winnebago Industries (under the Itasca and Winnebago name), Pacific and Gardner (on behalf of Sunrader). Since 1986 RV manufacturers have started to use the cab Toyota 1 ton heavier chassis.
Reputation
The Hilux has gained a reputation robustness and reliability, even during sustained heavy use and / or abuse, and are often referred to as "the indestructible car". In 2007, Top Gear in a special program in which Clarkson and James May raced a customized template from 2005 to 1996 Hilux pole magnetic north in northern Canada against Richard Hammond with a dog sled. The race, known as the Hilux Arctic Challenge, the truck made the first car to reach the Magnetic North Pole.
Outside television, these vehicles have been able to overcome 300.000 miles (500.000 km ~) with regular maintenance. It is also famous for being used as an improvised fighting vehicle technologies and militia "military forces irregular, especially in Third World conflicts.
