Bahasa Indonesia?

Hi.

I studied Indonesian throughout high school, and I was scoring straight As for four years. After high school I dropped it, and only recently I picked it back up. I haven’t studied it for four years, and the more I read Indonesian the more that comes back to me.

In about six months, I am planning on traveling to Indonesia where I will live for about 6-8 months. I will also be attending a language school there. Currently, I have multiple grammar books, and the Rosetta Stone language program. Learning Indonesian, for me, has proven to be extremely easy thus far, as I pick it up very quickly.

What would be the best course of action to master the language? Will immersion be useful? Should I study via grammar books and multimedia while waiting to go there?

Cheers

Certainly immersion will be useful. The thing about Indonesian is that there’s a great deal of variation between the standard written form and the colloquial spoken form. Being in Indonesia will make it a lot easier to learn the spoken version, and if you’re attending language classes while you’re there then presumably they’ll cover the standard version as well. While waiting to leave, I suppose the important thing is just to keep up some degree of practice. You don’t want to turn up having not read, heard or spoken the Indonesian language for six months.
